DEFTONES' MORENO: New Album Is More Energetic Than 'White Pony'

DEFTONES singer Chino Moreno recently spoke to Revolver magazine about the musical direction of the group's long-awaited fourth album, due in the spring via Maverick Records.

"I don't like to drop clues before the album's finished," Moreno said. "This way, when you hear it, you'll hear it fresh. Good things come to those who wait."

"I think this record carries a tad more energy than [2000's] 'White Pony'," Moreno continued. "When we were making that record, we were surrounded by a lot of angry, young nu-metal bands and we really wanted to make something that stood apart. There's aggressive stuff on 'White Pony', but I think it was a little more somber overall."

The band began writing and recording basic tracks for the as yet-untitled new album last March in their Sacramento rehearsal space after taking a five-month break. Moreno says that time apart — which found him recording and gigging with his TEAM SLEEP project while DEFTONES guitarist Stephen Carpenter worked with CYPRESS HILL frontman B-Real and former members of FEAR FACTORY in a side project called KUSH — allowed the band to come together with clearer heads than in the past. "Playing with other people is fun, but when we get back together it feels like home," said Moreno. "And Stephen and I are really seeing eye to eye on a lot of stuff now — which definitely didn't happen on 'White Pony'."
